The Experience

Private vehicle. Your pace. Scotland brought to life.

The Outlander Trail is a private, chauffeur-driven day from Edinburgh through the castles, palaces and villages where the story was filmed. Medieval fortresses on the Firth of Forth, a royal palace beside a loch, a seventeenth-century village of cobbled lanes. Six places, linked by some of central Scotland's loveliest country roads.

There's no coach, no crowd and no clipboard. Your chauffeur collects you from your Edinburgh hotel, and the day moves at whatever pace suits you. Linger where a place holds you, move on when you're ready. Alba Go plans the route, the timings and the details, so you can simply enjoy it.

The Journey

Six Filming Locations, One Unhurried Day

An indicative route through West Lothian, Fife and Stirlingshire, from your Edinburgh hotel and back again.

  1. Edinburgh · Collection from your hotel or accommodation
  2. Midhope Castle in Scotland, filming location for Lallybroch
    01Hopetoun Estate, West Lothian

    Midhope Castle

    On screen: Lallybroch

A sixteenth-century tower house in quiet estate parkland, instantly recognisable as Lallybroch, the Fraser family home. Even seen from the outside, it's one of the most atmospheric stops of the day.

    Around 30–45 minutes

Midhope Castle is located on a private estate and visitor access is seasonal and subject to estate availability. Access may sometimes be restricted or unavailable, and Alba Go cannot guarantee access on every tour date. If Midhope is unavailable, we'll substitute another filming location or give you more time elsewhere on the route.

  3. Blackness Castle on the Firth of Forth
    02Firth of Forth, near Linlithgow

    Blackness Castle

    On screen: Fort William

A fifteenth-century fortress on the shore of the Firth of Forth, its long walls earning it the name “the ship that never sailed”. Its courtyard and battlements became the English garrison at Fort William.

    Around 45 minutes–1 hour

  4. Linlithgow Palace ruins in West Lothian
    03Linlithgow, West Lothian

    Linlithgow Palace

    On screen: Wentworth Prison

The roofless royal palace beside Linlithgow Loch, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1542. Its stone passageways and gateway provided the setting for Wentworth Prison.

    Around 45 minutes–1 hour

  5. Historic village of Culross in Fife, beside the Firth of Forth
04Fife, on the Firth of Forth

    Culross

    On screen: Cranesmuir

One of Scotland's best-preserved seventeenth-century villages, with cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses and the ochre walls of Culross Palace. The village became Cranesmuir, home of Geillis Duncan, and the palace garden appears as Claire's herb garden at Castle Leoch.

    Around 1 hour

  6. Doune Castle in Stirlingshire
    05Doune, near Stirling

    Doune Castle

    On screen: Castle Leoch

A remarkably complete fourteenth-century courtyard castle above the River Teith, and the seat of the MacKenzies as Castle Leoch. Its great hall and kitchens are as evocative in person as on screen. Film lovers may also know it from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

    Around 1 hour

  7. Historic village centre of Falkland in Fife
    06Fife

    Falkland

    On screen: 1940s Inverness

A beautifully kept village beneath the Lomond Hills, gathered around its Renaissance royal palace. Its streets and fountain stood in for 1940s Inverness, where Claire and Frank's story begins. A gentle, golden-hour finish to the day.

    Around 45 minutes

  8. Edinburgh · Return to your hotel or accommodation

This is a carefully planned, indicative route rather than a fixed timetable. Traffic, opening hours, the weather and how long you choose to spend at each place all shape the day, so your chauffeur adjusts the order and pace as you go.

Before You Travel

Questions, Answered

Do I need to have watched Outlander to enjoy the tour?

Not at all. Every stop is a remarkable place in its own right: royal palaces, medieval castles and one of Scotland's best-preserved historic villages. Fans will recognise the locations instantly, and everyone else gets a beautifully paced day through Scottish history.

How long is the tour, and where does it start?

The Outlander Trail is a 10-hour private experience. Your chauffeur collects you from your hotel or accommodation in Edinburgh and returns you there at the end of the day.

Are attraction tickets included?

No. The price covers your private vehicle, chauffeur, fuel, standard mileage, waiting time and the agreed itinerary. Admission tickets, meals and personal expenses are not included. Several sites are run by Historic Environment Scotland or the National Trust for Scotland and charge their own admission.

Can we go inside Midhope Castle?

Midhope Castle is located on a private estate and visitor access is seasonal and subject to estate availability. Access may sometimes be restricted or unavailable, and we cannot guarantee access on every tour date. If Midhope is unavailable, we'll substitute another filming location or spend additional time elsewhere on the route.

Is the itinerary fixed?

No. The route is carefully planned but indicative. Traffic, opening times, the weather and how long you'd like at each place can all change the day, and your chauffeur adjusts the order and pace as you go.

How many people can join?

The Mercedes V-Class carries up to 6 passengers and the Executive Estate (BMW 5 Series Touring or Mercedes E-Class Estate) up to 3. The price is per vehicle, not per person.

What about lunch?

There's time for lunch built into the day, and your chauffeur can suggest good places along the route. Meals aren't included in the price.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend getting in touch at least 48 hours ahead, and earlier in summer. Message us on WhatsApp to check availability, or call 0131 392 1080 for anything short-notice.
